QUEZON CITY - The Local Government Academy (LGA) Executive Committee, spearheaded by Executive Director Thelma T. Vecina engaged in a dialogue with the Secretary of the Interior and Local Government (SILG) Eduardo Año last May 02, 2019 at the DILG-NAPOLCOM Center.

The main agenda for discussion with the SILG is the Program for Newly Elected Officials (Program for NEOs), the flagship program of the Department through the LGA which aims to build strategic leaders out of NEOs who would lead their respective local governments towards being competitive, efficient and responsive institutions for development. It primarily aims to provide holistic capacity development interventions for the new set of local officials to be elected in the May 2019 elections.

Secretary Año recognized the critical role that the NEO program will play in support of the government's thrust in ending local communist armed conflict. A manifestation of this recognition is the Secretary's commitment in facilitating the crafting of an Executive Order to obligate local chief executives (LCEs) to undergo the program for NEOs.

Another agenda discussed with the Secretary is the expansion of the Local Government Academy Training Center (LGATC) through the establishment of the LGATC in Davao and Clark. The fruitful meeting resulted to the guaranteed support of the secretary for the successful roll out of the Program for NEOs program. It also serves a manifestation of the Department's support to the LGA's vision of being the premier institution that sets the standards for local governance capacity development.
