PASIG CITY - The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), through its training arm, the Local Government Academy (LGA) has been all-out this Disaster Resilience month in orienting the country's newly-minted and re-elected Governors, City Mayors, and Municipal Mayors and guiding them to jumpstart local governance in their respective local government units.
For the first intervention under the second component of the program, the Basic Orientation Course with the theme: Priming Leaders for Effective Local Governance, seeks to enhance the competencies of NEOs in carrying their new tasks as leaders in community development while promoting peace and resilience towards inclusive and sustainable development.
The Local Chief Executives (LCEs) were engaged into various learning methodologies facilitated by a roster of some of the country's leading subject-matter experts on various key governance issues such as peace and development, disaster resilience and climate change adaption, and anti-illegal drugs strategy among others. Moreover, it also served as a platform of convergence amongst LCEs and various national government agencies.
An important highlight of this three-day intervention is where LCEs set their governance in motion by crafting their Executive Agenda and their Action Plan for their First 100 Days in office as leaders of their respective communities and in the same breath, help them transform their vision and agenda into concrete actions - programs, projects, and initiatives.
After the conduct of which, various LCEs have expressed their appreciation on the importance of the intervention especially to those who are newly-minted.
One Mayor finds the program to be "an important platform in the performance of my work. Understanding my accountabilities [as a public official], and the importance of work delegation." With another Mayor describing the intervention to be "as a helpful preparation for my first term as Mayor".
A flagship and continuing program of the DILG through the LGA, the Program for NEOs is a complete and innovative package of education, training and support services for local government units.
With this year's theme of "Pamumuno para sa Mapayapa, Matatag, at Patuloy na Pag-Unlad ng Buhay at Kinabukasan ng Bawat Pilipino" the program ultimately aims to equip NEOs with the necessary competencies in carrying out their mandates to providing a peaceful, resilient and quality life for all Filipinos.
